| Abstract: | In 2011, the German government passed a law, which allows “well integrated” children and young adults who are searching for asylum in Germany, to apply for a residence permit status if they fulfil specific criteria, which concern mainly education issues. With regard to the currently rising number of refugees, the aim of this thesis is to analyze the process of enabling underage refugees to become “well integrated” according to the right of abode on a local level. The research examines how communities, as “integration machines”, implement national and federal approaches concerning integration and how they use their leeway in order to support the structural integration of young refugees with additional education services. The research thereby follows sociologist Hoffmann-Nowotny´s approach, according to whom integration and assimilation not only depend on the immigrants’ willingness to adapt, but also on the willingness of the host society to integrate those people. In order to get a deep insight in the integration work of communities, an in-depth case study of the municipality Schwetzingen is conducted based on the indicators access to schooling, individual support at school and access to additional educational services. |
