Abstract:In this research we investigate the use of the Adapteva Epiphany Architecture, a modern many-core architecture, as a power efficient alternative to current signal processing solutions in phased-array radar systems. This research is performed using a E16G301 processor. Several micro-benchmarks are designed and performed to evaluate the processor, network and power performance. Also a front-end receiver is implemented consisting of a Hilbert filter, a bandpass filter and a beam-former task. The micro-benchmark results show that it is difficult to achieve maximum performance for the on-chip and off-chip networks of the Epiphany architecture. For on-chip and off-chip communication only 1445MB/s out of 2.4GB/s and 306MB/s out of 600MB/s were achieved respectively. For the front-end receiver, a sustainable input throughput of 34.4MS/s for four input channels was achieved, forming 8 partial output beams for two sets of two input channels. This achieved a power efficiency of 15.8 GFLOPS/Watt, excluding off-chip communication and IO rail standby power.
