Abstract:The role of international organizations is a highly discussed concern in the study of world politics. While theoretical studies are concerned with two crucial issues, the international institution´s design on the one hand and its effects on state behavior on the other hand, empirical analysis are much more concerned with the latter issue. This leaves an ample room for a specific focus on the design of international institutions. An investigation of the design can be considered as a great enrichment in the study of world politics. It enables a better understanding of the ways how international institutions operate in the world to solve problems and to improve the effectiveness in their decision-making. Thus, the focus lies particularly on the dimension of inclusive membership. The main research question is ´´Why does inclusive membership vary among international organizations?´´. A non-randomized research is conducted. A comparative case study serves to answer my research question. In this respect mainly eight cases are examined. By extending the work of Koremenos, Lipson & Snidal (2001), some possible causes for the variation in inclusive membership across international organizations are examined. By the application of a game-theoretic approach, the use of secondary qualitative data e.g. treaty provisions and agreements and the use of secondary quantitative data set e.g. COIL data set from Koremenos (2013) the research question will be answered.
