| Abstract: | This thesis is about the designing of a megayacht which will be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2015. The assignment was done at Sea Level Yacht Design & Engineering at the city of Muiden. Sea Level designs yachts in a great range of sizes, varying from firefighter boats to private yachts. Nevertheless the company tends to focus more and more on the larger yachts up to 100m. Furthermore, Sea Level is not only responsible for the yacht design. There is also a great team of engineers behind the designer. They check the feasability of the design. Furthermore Sea Level recognizes a change in the yachts’ usage. The owners nowadays are travelling a lot and they do not see their families very often. The yacht tends to become more and more of the means to have a nice time together with family and friends. The megayacht that needs to be designed, will be a media concept. It’s important to create these concepts, because it allows designers to shape the future of yacht design. New concepts are also good for the company’s image. It shows the outside world that Sea Level is a progressive company. It also brings forward new designs which can get attention and can eventually cause new clients. At last, this project offers to work together with external corporations. Together we might be able to come to new insights. During this design process we started off with the design brief created by Sea Level herself. This designbrief was assigned based on trends and events, among them a changing target group and the collaboration with the external company ‘Lou�wman’ (This is an external company involved in luxury goods). When the assignment was evaluated and the goals were clear, the analysis phase started. Studies have been made of the target group, the market is explored. Next comes the ideation phase. After completing three concept ideas, There has been made a deci�sion together with the Sea Level team to develop and complete one concept. This was done keeping the initial requirements in mind and testing these requirements to the actual possibilities. After this moment of decision, the design process was continued. Inspiration was found and with the help of formfinding studies the optimal shape was decided. During this formfinding studies, the accommodation of the different area’s was kept in mind. After completing the previous design phase, some presentation drawings were made. These were shown and discussed with Louwman to figure out whether there were interesting interfaces between the companies. The next stage in the process was to get more into detail. It was needed to make sure that every room had the right dimensions and was located as efficient as possible. The crew routes were set out and the layout became clearer and clearer. Also some last changes and improvements have been executed here. To finish this concept, 3D-CAD models were made and rendered with Keyshot. The results give a good impression of how the megayacht will eventually look. |
