Abstract:Currently, Dutch hospitals have difficulties managing their financial performance. The complexity of the DTC system makes it difficult for hospitals to see how well they are performing with respect to the agreements with health insurers. To control and manage the hospital funding there is a need for a decision support system. A Business Intelligence (BI) application for optimizing management decisions regarding the production of DTCs in Dutch hospitals is designed. The literature study provides an extensive review on BI in healthcare as well as the management of hospital production. A stakeholder analysis regarding the control of hospital production was performed. Performance management was used as a designing method for the BI application. BI has the potential to improve the financial performance of the Dutch hospitals by delivering actionable management information by using a data warehouse, analytical tools and dashboards. Together with performance management, as identified in the design of the application, this is the basis for a hospital to assess how well it is progressing towards its predetermined strategic objectives. It will help to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses, helps to decide on future directions, and enables taking corrective action for tactical decisions.
