Abstract:This report describes a bachelor assignment in which nanoparticle solutions are studied to understand their behavior. Nanoparticles have successfully been synthesized using a wet chemical seed-mediated synthesis method involving silver nitrate. These synthesized solutions were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy and imaged using SEM and STM imaging techniques to study their self-assembly. Scanning tunneling spectroscopic measurements of the solutions on an HOPG substrate were performed. Nanorods of aspect ratio 3-8 have been synthesized. These rods have been characterized via UV-Vis spectroscopy, clearly showing some of their properties such as rods-to-spheres ratio and polydispersity. The SEM scan images clearly show nanorods in a coffee ring form on both SiO2 and HOPG, the nanorods on an HOPG surface show alignment alongside HOPG step edges, this same behavior has not been successfully observed in nanorods imaged with scanning tunneling microscopy. Possible causes of this step edge alignment are discussed. IV-spectroscopies have been performed using STM showing gold nanorods on HOPG are more conductive than HOPG. A bulk layer of CTAB leftover from the synthesis process is less conductive than bare HOPG.
