Abstract:The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model is a model for technology integration in education, in which the relationship with pedagogy and content is central. At this moment, the TPACK self-report survey of Schmidt et al. (2009a) is an often used instrument to measure the TPACK of (pre-service) teachers. However, little research has been conducted on the validity of this instrument. In this study the construct validity of the survey is investigated through convergent and discriminant validity. In addition, it is investigated to which degree the scores on the TPACK self-report survey correlate higher with a TPACK measure with another instrument (lesson plan) when the scores are controlled for general self-efficacy. To answer these questions, 59 pre-service teachers completed the TPACK self-report questionnaire and a general self-efficacy questionnaire. In addition, 25 of these students designed a lesson plan that has been analyzed on TPACK level, in order to make comparisons between the questionnaire and the lesson plans. Analyzes are performed mainly through calculations with correlations. Results show that the questionnaire had little discriminating ability between different TPACK domains measured with the questionnaire. The results also show that the questionnaire did not discriminate between students from the first and second year of the education, between which a difference in TPACK level was expected. The correlations between corresponding domains measured with the questionnaire and the lesson plan turned out not to be significant, this result does not support convergent validity. Finally, the results showed that the scores on the TPACK self-report questionnaire and the scores on the lesson plan did not correlate higher when controlling for general self-efficacy. In this study the validity of the TPACK self-report survey has not been demonstrated. The study though has raised questions, for example regarding the relationship between the TPACK domains. Further research on these aspects is essential.
