Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to deliver a holistic and systematic tool for innovation driven firms in order to evaluate the capabilities of a given supplier base to identify prospects for new product development work due to a major shift in the innovation process in recent decades. “In an environment characterized by open innovation, the locus of innovation is moving out of the laboratory of a single, self-contained firm and into a network of collaborating partners.” For that reason the research purpose is to deliver a best-researched method that allows the purchasing department, especially category management function, to efficiently contribute to the early supplier involvement in a new product development project. Therefore the research will focus on two major objectives. The goal of the theoretical part is the investigation of the different criteria, which could help to estimate a supplier regarding its capabilities for innovation. The application part aims for the design of a supplier questionnaire with the selected criteria as final outcome of the research. In order to accomplish the task the following research methods were used: design-focused and theory-based business problem approach according to van Aken to select the criteria and the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method to test the selected criteria empirically. The study were conducted within the lighting industry at an European leader firm based in Germany. 35 supplier companies were selected as the research sample. The outcome of the research are 27 tested innovation criteria with its weight organised in form of a questionnaire divided in four functional areas with the given weight according to the outcome of the PLS-SEM evaluation. According to the analysed data a supplier matrix and ranking for the investigated sample were created at the end. For further research the author recommends to investigate different industries and expand the sample size at least to 80 suppliers in order to improve statistical power of the further research. Some criteria based on confidential data like finance information should be better operationalise in order to improve validity, because one-item measures score with less validity compared to multi-item measures.
