| Abstract: | Background: There is a lot to gain concerning patient safety in Dutch Hospitals. A possibility for improving safety is the patient’s involvement during his own treatment. Therefore, The Rotterdam Eye Hospital has started a pilot with the OOGchecklist. The OOGchecklist is an application on a tablet for patients, displaying particular information at certain moments during their healthcare treatment. The aim of this research is to achieve understanding of safety in a hospital from a patient perspective and examination of the experiences form both the patients and nurses regarding the usage, appreciation and impact of the OOGchecklist. Method: This research has a qualitative research design. In total 17 interviews with cataract patients are conducted. Besides the interviews, a focusgroup with including 6 cataract nurses were consulted. The data were both deductive and inductive analysed. Results: With regard to safety in a hospital, patients mentioned caregivers, who have expertise, are available and able to give good explanations. They also mentioned hygiene and aspects of their physical environment, such as the appearance of the hospital building. Most patients have used the OOGchecklist during their hospital visit, however, for most patients it was not clear why they received the OOGchecklist. Patients and their companions assessed the OOGchecklist positive, because they felt more involved in their care, however there are also some user disabilities mentioned, such as the use of difficult language. The nurses were slightly less positive, due to the confusion caused by the use of the OOGchecklist by patients and on the ward. The impact of the OOGchecklist on the safety of care is still unknown to both patients and nurses. Conclusion This study provides understanding of the definition: of safety from the patient’s perspective. For further research into involvement of patients in the safety of their own care, it is important to take this perspective into account. In addition, this study provides understanding of the experiences of both patients and nurses with the OOGchecklist. The OOGchecklist certainly offers the opportunity to involve patients in the safety of their own care, which is in this case correct information transfer between patient and nurse. However, the OOGchecklist still needs some improvements. |
