Abstract:Background: Chronic pain is in practice usually contested by many medical doctors visits and consulting various specialists in the healthcare circuit. In recent years there has been increasing attention to the development of methods to cope with pain, instead of fighting pain. ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), has been proven as an effective cognitive behavioural treatment method for coping with pain. Several interventions, both in the face-to-face treatment as well as online, turn out to achieve at, for example, the degree of pain experience and the prediction of future pain positive results. In order to investigate what specific aspects of ACT are responsible for the effects of the therapy, there are instruments required, which can measure these effects. In this manner, then, the degree of ACT consistent actions can be monitored en revealed. Method: The study used qualitative data from the online intervention "Living with pain" which was executed 2012/2013. E-mail messages between participants and facilitators have been analyzed on the basis of a codingscheme and validated. In order to develop a reliable scheme, we used two independent coders. Through literature review, coding 55 e-mails and update appointments, a codingscheme had been shaped as a tool for encoding ACT (in) consistent actions of counselors in online treatments. Result: The codingscheme has become an instrument that allows researchers to determine the degree of consistency in ACT. In this study 55 e-mail messages have been analyzed and coded. The e-mail messages from the counsellors are encoded by assigning labels and values per sentence. Every sentence had been assigned a label, which represents one of the six core processes of ACT or three additional labels. Each sentence in addition, has been assigned a number between -2 and +2 to value the act consistency in order to answer the research question. Conclusion: This study provides an answer to the question to develop a coding scheme in the online intervention " Living with Pain" which was conducted in 2012/2013. There is a coding scheme developed to investigate treatment integrity in following research. The coding scheme meets the demand to specifying and theorizing of ACT treatment in practice.
