Abstract:Background: Stressful or negative life events are a part of life and something every human being has to deal with sooner or later. Different people react differently to these events and the consequences for their wellbeing also differ from person to person.. When dealing with these events, some people experience acute stress of which they cannot recover, while other people’s well-being actually improves. There is a new movement within the field of psychology, named positive psychology, which focuses on examining and understanding the concept of wellbeing. It is important to focus research on wellbeing because a high level of wellbeing can cause a better health and a longer life. Also, people with a high level of wellbeing are better able to deal with the daily stressors of life. This research focuses on a positive psychological self help intervention, which deals with different aspects of positive psychology. The effect of the self help course on the wellbeing and resilience of the participants is examined. Methods: 275 people with a low or moderate level of wellbeing without severe depressive or anxiety symptoms were randomized into the intervention group or the control group. The intervention consisted of an 8 to 12 week long self help course 'Dit is jouw leven, ervaar de effecten van de positieve psychologie' (‘This is your life, experience the effects of positive psychology’) with online counseling by trained senior Psychology students. The baseline was measured prior to the intervention and the second measurement was taken one day after e-mail contact was ended, at the latest after 12 weeks. Effects were measured by self-reported outcome measures of wellbeing and resilience. Possible moderating outcomes were the personality traits neuroticism, conscientiousness and extraversion. Results: The intervention group reported significantly higher levels of wellbeing and resilience than the waiting list group. The moderation analysis shows that the growth in wellbeing and resilience wasn’t moderated by neuroticism, conscientiousness or extraversion. Conclusion: This study shows that a self-help course based on multiple components of positive psychology can improve the level of wellbeing and resilience. This study is the first that examines multiple components of positive psychology in one self-help course. Also it is one of the few studies in which personality as a moderator is examined. Therefore this study could provide an opening for more research into multi-component positive psychological interventions and the moderating effect of personality. This could provide a better understanding of the effect of the different components and of the personality traits that influence or explain the success of the self help course.
