Abstract:In literature little is known about the relationship between well-being and physical health. It is known that health behaviour plays a mediating role in the relationship between well-being and physical health. However, there is no clear and complete picture regarding the association between well-being and health behaviour. The purpose of this longitudinal study is to examine to what extent the different aspects of well-being (emotional, social, psychological and total) could predict the various health behaviours (smoking, alcohol, exercise and food) over time. The 1188 randomly selected participants, aged between 18 and 87 years, represent the Dutch population. Each participant filled in the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) once, and a health questionnaire twice, one in 2007 and one in 2008. Research has indicated that each aspect of well-being, cross-sectional and/or longitudinal, is significantly associated with at least one of the health behaviours smoking, exercise and food. The multivariate longitudinal analysis shows that emotional well-being is significantly (p<.05) associated with smoking (OR= 1.24) and food (OR= 1.25). In addition, psychological well-being is also significantly associated with exercise (OR= 1.18). These multivariate analyzes were adjusted for sex, age and education on health behaviours. Alcohol consumption was not associated with any of the aspects of well-being. Based on this research it is recommended to focus further therapies and interventions more on promoting well-being in order to increase health behaviour.
