Abstract:Inquiry learning is exploring the natural world, in which children ask questions, make discoveries and gain new knowledge through experimentation. In this process it is important that children are supported during their investigations to develop their inquiry learning skills. A concept cartoon is an example of a positive, approachable method to support the inquiry practices of elementary school children. This study examines whether the learning performance of elementary school children from grade 7 and 8 will be improved if they are supported with concept cartoons. The focus of this study will be on one specific inquiry skill, hypothesis generation. In this study, 44 children participated from group seven and eight from two elementary schools. It was expected that children without the support would generate only one hypothesis. It was also expected that children with the support would generate more than one hypothesis and draw valid conclusions. The results showed that children without the support are not able to generate more than one hypothesis. Also the results showed a significant difference between the group with the support and the group without the support. The participants with the support generated more than one hypothesis than the group without the support. The expectation that concept cartoons would help children to generate more alternative hypothesis is not supported by the results, no difference between the groups were detected in drawing valid conclusions. It can be concluded that concept cartoons helps children to generate more than one hypothesis, but there is no evidence that concept cartoons encourages children to generate more alternative hypothesis or draw more valid conclusions.
