| Abstract: | To know whether or not there are signs of existential fear and to which extend it dominates, an adequate research tool is essential. This article reviews the research that examined whether the Dutch Ultimate Concern Scale (DUCS) suffices when performed on a Dutch population. The DUCS is the first Dutch questionnaire that tries to measure existential fear. To gain a better understanding of existential fear, an overview is given of the most common theories and categorizations. During the research the Three-Step Test-Interview (TSTI) was used as method of interviewing in order to determine the understanding of the items in the DUCS. The questionnaire is not quite sufficient, there is room for some improvements. These improvements focus on extending instructions, rephrasing of some of the items and further specification of answer categories. As the DUCS touches upon profound themes attention was also paid to the amount of strain perceived and the use of defence mechanisms. No problematic strain was experienced during the interviews. The results of this research are not sufficient in order to come to a statement on the role of defence mechanisms. The attention to defence mechanisms does bring a new perspective into mind: can it be helpful for patients who suffer from existential fear to learn about effective defence mechanisms? |
