Abstract:Positive mental health is not described in a consistent way in both past and present. Researchers seem to look for a fully comprehensive theory when it comes to the positive mental health. The question remains of how a more complete representation of the optimal functioning can be attained, which aspects belong to the positive mental health and which aspects do not. This study will therefore focus on receiving more information on the current aspects of the positive mental health. In addition, this study focuses on aspects of the Self-Determination Theory that might contribute to the description of the positive mental health. Out of the 299 respondents who have participated in the survey, 237 respondents were usable for the study. The Flourishing Scale, the Vitality Scale, the Positive Mental Health Scale and the Basic Needs Satisfaction in General Scale were used to collect the research data. Furthermore, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (г) has been used to measure the coherence and multiple regression analysis in order to determine the variances. The results of this study provide strong support for the notion that people who thrive meet their needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness. Moreover, both personal growth and vitality appear to contribute to the optimal level of functioning. Competence and relatedness do not seem to be conditions for the level of personal growth. Additionally, this study shows that the relationship between vitality and competence is perhaps more important than previously assumed. With this, the current study offers the specific understanding that vitality in addition to flourishing may play a mediating role in the positive mental health.
