Abstract:Mental health has long been defined as the absence of mental disorders or symptoms. The positive psychology movement argues to focus research more on the mechanisms and processes of optimal functioning in individuals, relations en societies. This translates into the idea that besides a dimension of mental disorders and psychopathology, there is another dimension of mental health, called positive mental health. Positive mental health encompasses a more general idea of well-being, en is related to psychopathology, but is not merely the absence of it. An improvement in positive mental health appears to protect people against developing or relapsing in mental disorders or symptoms thereof. To make use of this protecting effect a new form of therapy was developed, called well-being therapy (WBT), which aims to improve the positive mental health, and thereby protect against psychopathology. This study was conducted to gain knowledge of how individual participants experience well-being therapy. In this study the subjective experiences with WBT were examined in five participants. These patients had undergone WBT as part of a pilot in a larger-scale research focusing on the effects of WBT after treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. In order to examine their experiences interviews were conducted, recorded and transcribed. The transcripts were used for a context analysis and a thematic analysis. De patients were largely positive about their experiences with WBT, one was explicitly negative. The thematic analysis revealed 29 themes that the patients used to describe their experiences with the therapy. Most of these themes can be divided into four categories: perceived usability and effects, practical execution, theoretical contents and texts, and exercises. Each patient mentioned different themes to be important for them which were hardly or not mentioned by other patients. From this it can be said that each patient had a very different experience with WBT. Some possible improvements were also mentioned. In general it can be concluded that WBT is a versatile form of therapy that triggers different experiences in each patient. This can be viewed as a strong point of the therapy, and allows it to play an important part in improving patient-centered care.
