Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the current study was to investigate if self compassion can be added as fourth basic need to the self-determination theory to predict mental health. Self compassion is a concept of positive psychology and describes the ability to deal with suffering and unpleasant experiences. This is missing in the self-determination theory. Self compassion is consistent with the reformulation of the positive psychology which focuses both on strengths as well as symptoms of a human being. Method: To tackle the main objective a survey study was done among 237 participants. First a Pearson’s correlation analysis determined the strength of association between self compassion and mental health and between self compassion and the three basic needs. Secondly, a hierarchical regression analysis showed if self compassion adds explanatory value to the three basic needs explanatory value to predict mental health. Finally a moderation analysis determined if self compassion is a moderator for the basic needs. Results: There is a statistically significant correlation between self compassion and the three basic needs. There is also a statistically significant correlation between self compassion and mental health. The hierarchical regression analysis found that self compassion adds statistically significantly explanatory value regarding the three basic needs to predict mental health. However it seems that two of three basic needs, namely autonomy and relatedness do not explain mental health. Further, it seems that self compassion is not a moderator Conclusion: In this study, there is evidence for and against the addition of self-compassion as the fourth basic need in the self-determination theory for predicting mental health. Further research is needed to determine whether self-compassion can be added to the self-determination theory. It may serve fruitful to examine the influence of culture. A recommendation for practice is to add Mindful Self-Compassion Training (MSC) to existing therapies, given the promising results. It seems that the self-determination theory fails on theoretical and practical points. Theoretically it fails because the basic needs do not explain mental health, in practical terms because there is a lack of integration between the treatment of disorders and promoting well-being. Positive psychology as a science should focus on both strengths and symptoms.
