Abstract:Introduction: A lot of older people suffer from psychological and physical difficulties. This study aims to reveal if the reminiscence intervention of ‘dear memories’ is effective in older people with different levels of cognition, in getting a higher mastery (control of one’s own life). It is expected that the intervention will have an effect on older people with different levels of cognition. The purpose of this research is to improve the welfare of the elderly and to reduce the social costs. Methods: Questionnaires are taken from 24 people of 63 to 97 year old. The questionnaire Pearlin Mastery Scale (PMS) and the Mini mental state examination (MMSE) contained questions about mastery and cognition. A questionnaire was administered prior to the intervention t0 and two months after the intervention t1. There was searched for coherence between these variables by doing an ancova analyse and a moderation analyse. Results: There was no significant evidence that the mastery of the experimental group has more improved than the mastery of the control group after the intervention, F=1,093, p=0,308. Furthermore, there was no significant evidence that a high cognition ensures a higher mastery, B= 0,346, p=0,259. Discussion: There are no significant results in this study. The cause may lie in another set-up of my research, compared to the studies cited. A limitation of this study is that the recruitment has not produced enough respondents. One recommendation is that it is important to carry out this study one more time with a larger sample size, because then there might be more significant results.
