Abstract:Inquiry learning is a form of education that allows pupils to gain knowledge and skills by self-directed investigations. Within the current study, the focus was set on the “experimentation” component of scientific inquiry. Pupils ran their own experiments to be able to give an answer to research questions. Previous research showed that unguided learning is ineffective, which is the reason why there was offered guidance during the current study. The chosen forms of guidance are instruction and prompts, since it turned out that a combination of these two forms is sufficient. Both types of guidance concerned the control-of-variables strategy (CVS), a research strategy pupils were suppose to use during their experiments. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the amount of prompts during the experimentation fase on the use of the CVS. 69 pupils participated to the experiment, randomly assigned to the three conditions. These conditions consisted of one control condition and two experimental conditions, with the sole difference in the amount of prompts (all pupils received the instruction). The results showed that pupils who received a prompt prior to every new variable in the simulation used the CVS more often than pupils from the controle condition who did not receive any prompts. A prompt prior to every drawn out experiment led to as much CVS use as no prompts. Furthermore a correlation had been found between the use of the CVS and the score on the CVS posttest. However, this cohesion only existed in two of the three conditions: no significant correlation has been found in the condition in which pupils received a prompt prior to every new variable.
