Abstract:Of all psychiatric disorders among adolescents in the Netherlands, eating disorders know the highest morbidity. Early identification of an eating disorder is essential because the chance of curing it is significantly greater when action is taken quickly. In the world of elite athletes there is proof that eating disorders are relatively common due to athletes preoccupation with body-weight, shape and the obsessive tendency to go further and further. Thorough literature was examined what is known about eating disorders in elite sports so far. It was while searching for the role of the coach in eating disorders in elite athletes. Qualitative research through open interviews gave insight into the experiences of coaches with eating disorders in elite sports and the way they accompany their talents. Interviews were conducted under five Dutch top coaches and two elite athletes who talked about the role of the coach in eating disorders in elite sports. This research was conducted within a chosen theoretical framework, on which the interview questions were based. Elite athletes have an increased risk for the development of an eating disorder. Patients with eating disorders often have, just like elite athletes, properties such as performance orientation and perfectionism. Also found was that coaches are influential people in directing and guiding athletes. The attitude and behaviour of coaches are related to the probability of the emergence of an eating disorder in an elite athlete. The interviews revealed that all coaches have had experiences with eating disorders in elite sports. There are several factors that underlie the behaviour of the coach on this subject, whose attitude and self-efficacy were usually called by the respondents. Preventive measures were hardly taken. Signalling is done in many different ways. One coach holds himself responsible for matters concerning eating behaviours of athletes while other coaches outsource this task to specialists within the staff. Coaches have influence on thoughts and beliefs of an athlete on their weight, body shape and nutrition, as evidenced by literature. The interviews revealed that there may be a discrepancy between the coaching style coaches intend to apply and the coaching style they actually use while coaching on nutrition and weight. This often proved to be more negative than the coach assumed.
