Abstract:People do often behave different towards people from another group and thereby favor people of their own group. We expect this difference also if it comes to lying behavior. Does social categorization have influence on the intention to lie? This study goes both about this social factor of categorization of groups and the culture of someone. In addition we studied the individual factor of Machiavellianism. Therefore an online survey was constructed. The results show that people find it more acceptable to lie against an outgroup member rather than an ingroup member. Further people with a high degree of individualism find it also more acceptable to lie against an outgroup member. That was not the case with people with a low degree of individualism. The degree of collectivism does not appear to have an effect on the acceptation of lying. Besides a high degree of Machiavellianism implies a high degree of acceptation. Although the assumption that the acceptation was strong connected with the intention to lie was true, some results do show another effect.
