Abstract:In recent years the interest for social media has been increasing continuously. Therefore it becomes more conventional to use these networks as a medium to share information with other people, such as information about nutritional risks. There has been growing interest also for healthy, and more in particular organic products. So far there is only little known about the predictors of the intention of social media users to share information online about nutritional risks of these organic products and that is why the study focusses on this topic. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior it was analyzed to what extent the ‘intention’ can be predicted by the determinants 'attitude’, 'subjective norm' and 'perceived behavioral control'. With the aid of a 7 point Likert Scale onlinesurvey with 101 respondents from the University of Twente it could be measured between which determinants a positive relationship exists and which determinants predict the dependent variable 'intention' most. The statistical analysis was performed using the computerprogram SPSS. On the basis of a correlation analysis it could be shown that all determinants were significantly positive correlated with each other. These findings support the influence of the three determinants of the Theory of Planned Behavior on the intention to share information online about nutritional risks of organic products. The results of the regression analysis showed that 'attitude' and 'subjective norm' predicted 'intention' most. This study shows that especially personal attitude and the feeling that the social environment has certain expectations affect the intention to share information on the internet about nutritional risks of organic products. These findings provide knowledge about the predictors of the students’ behavior to share information through social media in Europe with regard to nutritional risks of organic products. It has informational value for risk communication, because behavior of social media users to share information could be specifically stimulated by influencing the determinats of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Besides it could be shown that information about nitritional risks is primarily shared via the social media Facebook and email.
