| Abstract: | Sometimes people make use of compensatory health beliefs in order to make different choices in their behaviour. These compensatory health beliefs are based on the beliefs people have that their behaviour can be compensated by other behaviour in regards to their physical activities. An example of a compensatory health belief could be that taking the stairs four times can compensate for not going to the gym. A possible influence on this compensatory health beliefs and -behaviour could be the internal or external orientation of people with regards to their health. Compensatory health beliefs and -behaviour are researched with a longitudinal study with a time span of 2 weeks. The participants were almost all undergraduate students from the University of Twente. It was an exploratory study to give more insight about the several constructs; compensatory health beliefs, compensatory health behaviour, internal and external attribution that people make with regards to physical activity and health. Compensatory health beliefs and -behaviour appeared to be stable over a time span of two weeks. Next to this, people reported significantly less compensatory health behaviour than compensatory health beliefs. It seems that having compensatory health beliefs doesn’t have to result in an equal amount of compensatory health behaviour. Furthermore internal and external attribution wasn’t significantly influencing the compensatory health behaviours of respondents. It seems that only internally focused people appeared to develop more compensatory health behaviour with regards to their compensatory health beliefs. |
