Abstract:Many people read horoscopes and even those who do not believe the predictions assert that some statements in horoscopes apply to them. Although horoscopes are not reliable it is not known whether they affect human behaviour. This study addressed two aspects: self-efficacy and risk perception. The aim of the study was to determine whether self-efficacy and risk perception of students can be affected by what they read in a horoscope. Ninety-five students from the University of Twente participated in the study: half of them received a horoscope with positive predictions concerning their study and the other half received a horoscope with negative predictions concerning their study. All participants completed a questionnaire in which their attitude toward astrology was measured and both before and after reading the horoscope their level of self-efficacy and risk perception. Although many participants did not believe in astrology, risk perception was influenced by reading a positive horoscope: the perception of risk was lower. Self-efficacy increased after reading a horoscope but this change was not related to the type of horoscope. These results demonstrate that the reading of horoscopes can influence self-efficacy and perception of risks. This influence is considered to be negative when it affects human behavior.
