Abstract:Introduction: Although online interventions are effective in helping patients to improve their mental health, non-adherence is a common issue that needs to be addressed. The following survey investigates the quality of e-mail counseling and its influence on the non-adherence percentage of the online intervention ‘Living with pain’, a guided self-help intervention based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. Aim: The aim of this survey is to examine the relation between content and structure of e-mails and premature termination of the online intervention. The e-mails were written in the domain of e-mail counseling by the online intervention ‘Living with pain’. Method: This relation is studied by the application of a self-developed code scheme. Within that code scheme were six main factors evaluated. To analyze these factors two groups were compared. One group consisted of participants who had completed the online intervention. The other group consisted of participants who had dropped out of the online intervention. Results: The content of the e-mails had an impact on whether the participants continued the online intervention or terminated it prematurely. The structure of the e-mails did not have influence on premature termination. Conclusion: E-mail counseling of high quality can reduce the non-adherence percentage of an online intervention. In this connection, the content of the e-mails is of much importance. Further research: This survey has an explorative character. Therefore further research is needed to support these results and indications achieved. The attention should mainly be paid to the subjectivity of the developed code scheme and for that reason it is recommended that a second judge is included in additional researches. In this study, interesting results were found which can help to educate counselors in e-mail communication.
