Abstract:This study investigated the effectiveness of the ‘three good things exercise’ on positive and negative affect and if personality influences the effectiveness. According to positive psychology it is important that psychology does not only focus on pathology but also tries to increase wellbeing. Participants were asked to take part in a one week intervention with the ‘three good things exercise’. The intervention started with a personality test (BFI-10) and the participants completed the ‘three good things exercise’ every day. In order to monitor the positive and negative affect of the participants they filled in the I-PANAS-SF after doing the exercise. Results showed that the effectiveness of the intervention did not depend on personality. Furthermore the intervention only showed effects for negative affect but not for positive affect. Further research should revise the influence of personality on the effectiveness with a larger sample size. Additionally more research has to be done in order to determine whether the effects on positive affect could have been monitored on long term follow up measures and if so why those effects come with a delay.
