Abstract:Background: ‘Who am I?’ is a life story intervention for psychiatric patients with a mild to moderate mental disability. The life story of the patient is structured, it starts with the past, then with the present and it works to the future. This research will look at the changes of the intervention ‘Who am I?’ shows on level of complaints and the positive psychological well-being on psychiatric patients with a mild to moderate mental disability. Further there will be looked at the difference of changes on level of complaints and positive psychological well-being between moderate and mild mental disabled patients, between patients with a mild to moderate mental disability with or without traumatic related complaints and between patients with a mild to moderate mental disability with or without complaints of depression. Method: To get insight in the change of level of complaints and the positive psychological well-being the following questionnaires were used: the ‘Symptom Checklist 90’ (SCL- 90), the ‘Outcome Questionnaire 45’ (OQ- 45), the ‘Mental Health Continuüm-Short Form’ (MHC-SF), the ‘Satisfaction With Life Scale’ (SWLS), the ‘mastery scale’ and the ‘Purpose in Life scale’ (PIL scale). These questionnaires were filled in by 20 patients (N=20) before (T0) and after (T1) participation of the intervention. The SCL- 90 were filled in by 40 patients (N=40), because in later research the other questionnaires were added. From the total of 40 patients 22 are mild mentally disabled, 17 patients have traumatic related complaints and 10 patients have complaints of depression. To see the changes of the level of complaints and the positive psychological well-being after participation of the intervention, the ‘Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test’ was used to analyse the data. To see if there is a significant difference between mild mental disabled patients and moderate mental disabled patients, between patients with a mental disability with or without traumatic related complaints and between patients with a mental disability with or without complaints of depression, the ‘Mann- Whitney U’ was used to analyse the data. Results: There was found a significant decrease in level of complaints and an increase of positive psychological well-being after participation in the life story intervention ‘Who am I?’. Only the PIL scale shows no significant difference. There were no significant differences found between mild and moderate mentally disabled patients on one of the questionnaires. Also there is no significant difference found between patients with a mental disability with or without traumatic related complaints. The MHC- SF shows a significant difference between patients with a mental disability with or without complaints of depression. Patients with a mental disability and complaints of depression shows a larger improvement of the positive psychological functioning then patients with a mental disability without complaints of depression. On the other questionnaires no significant differences were found between these two groups. Conclusions: ‘Who am I?’ reduces psychological complaints and improves the positive psychological well-being, except the experience of a purpose in life. This intervention suits psychiatric patients with a mild to moderate mental disability. ‘Who am I?’ suits also psychiatric patients with a mental disability and traumatic related complaints. ‘Who am I?’ especially suits patients with a mental disability and complaints of depression.
