Abstract:This research focuses on the differences in narrative future imagination between a clinical and non-clinical participant and the relation with well-being. Mapping the differences and similarities between these groups makes us rich in information and is particularly relevant in the context of mental health promotion. With this knowledge, we could promote more mental health through narrative future imagination. Data was collected in the levensverhalenlab, at the University of Twente and at a German clinic. The data were collected in the form of writing ‘a letter from the future’, and filling in a well-being questionnaire. The sample consists of 43 clinical and 43 non-clinical participants. The analysis of future narrative imagination is made on the base of an existing coding system of 23 psychological functions, which due to the high number are divided into six clusters: looking forward, looking back, negative and resentful, insight, plan and give advice and positive and thankful. The results show that narrative future imagination is different in two ways for a clinical and non-clinical group. The non-clinical group makes more use and uses other psychological functions of imagination. The most common of psychological functions in clinical group include: catastrophize, explore options, plan steps and positive re-interpretation and acceptance. The most common in non-clinical group include: imagine/experienced through imagination, giving existential advice, dreams come true, emotional support/empathy and praise one self. With regarding to the clusters, most used by non-clinical group was looking forward and by the clinical group it was negative and resentful and insight. Within the clusters, there is a correlation observed in the clinical group between insight and negative resentful, plan and give advice, positive and thankful and between plan and give advice and positive thankful. In the non-clinical group, there was a link between looking back and looking forward and looking back and negative and resentful. Regarding to the correlation analyses between narrative future imagination and well-being, there was no correlation. In conclusion, future narrative imagination is different for a clinical and non-clinical group. On the basis of the findings from post-hoc analyze, there is a number of significant differences in correlations found between the clinical and non-clinical group for well-being. Therefore, further research is strongly recommended, so that more detailed statements can be made, regarding future narrative imagination in relation to well-being.
