Abstract:Introduction: This is an explorative research on which psychological processes play a role in collective narrative futuring. Professional literature provides for information about narrative psychology, futuring and Group interventions, but not for a combination of the three. This research searches for the interaction. It focuses on the roles that participants play and the psychological processes that arise in collective narrative futuring. In that way, we try to gain insight in the functioning of collective narrative futuring. Methods: The keynote in this research is a group intervention in which the participants write a letter from a personally chosen future to themselves or another person. The goal is to concretely imagine a positive future. After writing the letter, it is shared with the other persons in the group. We make a distinction between the roles, or modes, of writer, sharer and listener, which all of the participants act. The participants participated in the intervention in a practical session of the course Narrative Psychology. The measuring instruments where a survey and video images of a group discussion in which they reflected on their experiences. The survey and video transcription were coded and analysed according to the Cunstrictivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2006). Observations of the group proces were used to put into context the data and to form a theory. Results: We derived seven psychological processes from the qualitative analysis, which represent what happened to the participants during the intervention. These were narrative formulation; giving substance to the depicted future; opinion of oneself; perceived opinion of others and fear for rejection or criticism; anticipation to unacquainted fellow students; experiencing and showing engagement; and reflection. Besides writing, sharing and listening, there appeared to exist a fourth mode: processing. This form of reflection and attaching significance to psychological processes in oneself and someone else seems to occur after the other three modes and result in different experiences. Conclusion: Besides finding a fourth mode, we found six main results, which display the significance of narrative futuring, social processes, self-disclosure, emotional experience, identity development and personal development. These principal themes represent the ways in which change occurred during the intervention. Psychological processes are more or less conscious mechanisms, actions, competences or concepts. The principal themes are on a more abstract and unconscious level. Discussion: In spite of a number of limitations, which lied mainly in external validity, this research is sound. Although it is not evaluative, it has become clear that the participants have experienced a great deal during the intervention. These experiences were positive as well as negative, but can be possibly therapeutic. This gives hope for a possibly effective intervention. Further research is strongly recommended.
