Abstract:People with intellectual disabilities (ID) often show challenging behavior. This challenging behavior is often experienced as unexpected by their caregivers. During the current study this challenging behavior and possible causes of this behavior, are examined. Through physiological measurements combined with film data, stressful events and environmental variables that are possibly related to these moments of stress, are measured. The skin conductance of 9 client with ID was measured. Through these measurements the level of arousal of the clients was determined. By analyzing the environmental variables using a pre-determined protocol, and linking this data to the physiological measurements, it was possible to determine significant differences in the presence of environmental variables during the different levels of physiological arousal (from low to high arousal). Results show that moments of transition, moments that caregivers have physical contact with clients, a caregiver is in the personal environment of the client, a caregiver raises his voice and when a caregiver increases the distance between him and the client, are significantly more often present during the moments of high physiological arousal. To have more certainty about the relationship between these environmental variables and the level of arousal, further research is required.
