Abstract:One out of five adults in Europe has in his or her life suffered from long-term (6 months or more) pain. Pain distracts one from daily life and attention to pain can make the pain perception even worse. Annually approximately 800 patients with chronical pain are being treated in the Roessingh revalidation center in Enschede. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is applied during the treatment. This research represents the perspective of the patients on the treatment for chronical pain done by Roessingh. The data is collected by using semi-structured interviews. By using the ‘grounded theory’ the contentanalysis showed that patients have different perspectives concerning the ACT treatment and the effectiveness of it. From the results one can say that it was important for the patients whether they could apply their knowledge about the treatment of the chronical pain in daily life practices, for example taking rest whenever necessary. A stimulating factor here is the acceptance of the present pain. Limiting factors are the characteristics of the patient and how he or she deals with the situation. The narrative approach contributes to the already existing literature about the effectiveness of the ACT treatment with chronical pain. Futhermore, one gains new insights concerning the mechanisms of the threatment from the perspective of the patiënt. The most important conclusion of the research is that a similarity and a difference between the perspectives about the treatments of the participants exists. Both participants have learned that it is important to think more of themselves. Moreover, it proved to be important to improve declaring/defining borders and to learn to be open to others.
