Abstract:Current research of the success of interventions focuses on the factors that have to be present to produce a change. Processes that are responsible for this change are not taken into account. The following research seeks to identify these change processes, to make a prediction of benefit during a life-review intervention. For this, two cases of the online intervention ‘Op Verhaal Komen’ are used. The intervention, developed by Bohlmeijer and Westerhof, is directed to people in their later life period who suffer from light depressive symptoms. The intervention seems to have been successful in reducing depressive complaints and improving wellbeing. But the responsible processes for this change in benefit are not enough identified. The processes of benefit have been analysed in a qualitative manner and with the help of Change Process Research. For this, the emails of the participants and the therapists have been analysed with the help of a holistic content analysis as well as an identity analysis. After analysing both cases separately, the two cases have been compared. Based on these analyses an overall prediction of the benefit of the participants has been made. In the next step the real scores of benefit were given and were compared to the prediction. At the end a discussion explains the emerged differences or agreements. During the analyses both participants seemed to benefit from the intervention. Nevertheless the real results showed differences. Those differences in prediction and results can be explained through the use of the autobiographic neutral lively and the growing self. The participant, who was able to actively integrate the past in his/her current life, seemed to have had more benefit. In contrast the wellbeing of this participant has been less. Therefore processes of consciousness appear to influence the benefit of the intervention. Based on this research it can be concluded that the differences in processes, which influence the benefit of an intervention, are marginal. Moreover it seems to be important to make a difference between depressive complaints and wellbeing, because they react differently and influence each other. Depressive complaints seem to become less when the wellbeing gets less, too. The hypothesis for this pattern is that a need for change develops by a bad feeling of wellbeing. Through the feeling of change the depressive complains can become less. For future research it seems to be important to look at this pattern to make its generalizability possible.
