Abstract:The scope of the present research was to investigate the connection between group membership and acceptance of flaming. The literature states that ingroup members are more inclined to conform to group norms. People are also more inclined to conform to a majority of a certain size. The study was set up as an online experimental questionnaire. The independent variables were group membership and the number of flames. 81 UT-students participated in the study. Participants read an article together with some flames and then filled in the questionnaire. An ANOVA was used to analyse the data. There were no significant effects found from group membership and the amount of flames. An interaction effect between group membership and the amount of flames was not found. Therefore the main question of this study could not be answered. In the different articles the separate effects of group membership and amount of flames were however found. Probably the superordinate group, Students, was more salient then the ingroup, UT-students. This can account for the failure of the manipulation.
