Abstract:Objective: Since the founding of the website for online treatment for problem drinkers 'Alcoholdebaas.nl', much research has been done about the effects of the treatment. For the time being, only the relatively short-term effects have been investigated. The objective of this study was to get insight into the long-term effects, three to five years after treatment, of Alcoholdebaas.nl. Another objective was to find out whether relapse had a predictive value on the long-term effects. Method: An online survey was used to investigate current alcohol consumption, physical and mental health and quality of life of the respondents. Respondents were 195 ex-participants of Alcoholebaas.nl, who searched help for their alcohol problem during the period of 2009 to 2011. Results were compared to the pre- and post treatment results by using T-tests, Repeated Measures ANOVA tests , a Cochran's Q test, and Chi-square tests. To get an idea of the changes in mental complaints in time, the Pearson Correlation has been calculated between complaints and alcohol consumption. For elaboration, 12 respondents were chosen for a telephone interview. Results: On average, ex-participants now consume less alcohol than before the start of the treatment, but more than right after treatment. Ex-participants drank more often above the guidelines for low-risk drinking now (50,3%) than right after treatment (21,1%). This percentage was, however, lower than compared to the intake, although not significant. It was found that relapse is predictive for alcohol consumption, physical and mental health, and assessment of general health. Ex-participants who have had a relapse, consumed in general more alcohol, had more complaints and assessed their health as being worse. Ex-participants considered their physical and mental health to be good. The amount of physical complaints decreased when compared to before the start of treatment. It is to be expected that the amount of mental complaints has been reduced, due to its correlation with alcohol consumption. Overall, the quality of life of the ex-participants was good. Conclusion: The internet treatment seems to be effective in the reduction of alcohol consumption and physical and mental complaints in the long-term. Further research should be carried out into relapse. Relapse is predictive for alcohol consumption and physical and mental complaints, which makes obtaining insight into the reasons for relapse important. Once there is more insight, it can be considered to focus more on the prevention of relapse during the treatment. This could make the treatment even more effective.
