Abstract:Background: Red yeast rice extract can reduce cholesterol levels. The active ingredient in this red rice yeast extract is Monacolin K. Studies show that some of the statin users do not tolerate statins and may have need for an alternative to lower cholesterol. Red rice yeast extract could be this alternative. Perfect Health advises clients of the company Prescan to use this red yeast rice extract in the form of a so called Metabolism Program. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to see to what extent this Metabolism Program has been working for the Prescan customers. The extent to which the use of the Metabolism Program reduces the risk of heart diseases will be investigated as well. The third objective is to look at the possible introduction of Metabolism Program for a group of people who can’t tolerate statins. Method: For this study 78 clients of Prescan, who use the Metabolism Program, are emailed, to aks themt to participate in this study. Ultimately, 39 clients participated in this research that has been done by the University of Twente and the (medical) companies Prescan and Perfect Health. Within this research their cholesterol levels was checked twice. These check included: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Results: A statistically significant reduction is found in the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Total cholesterol decreased by 1.31 mmol / liter. LDL cholesterol decreased 1.22 mmol per liter and triglycerides decreased by 0.41 mmol / liter. A second result concerns the group who can’t take statins. In the Netherlands this group consists of approximately 60,000 individuals. If this group would all use the Metabolism Program, the costs of heart disease would decrease. Savings would be approximately four million in ten years. Limitation: This was a small study with a selective research group, conducted in a short period of time and focused on laboratory results. Conclusion: In this study the Metabolism Program reduced the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Further research into the red rice yeast extract is required because of the small sample size of this study. A large placebo-controlled study carried out over several years seems to be the best option. The Metabolism Program seems to be a promising alternative for patients with high cholesterol who do not want to take or can’t tolerate statins.
