Abstract:Recent data shows that there is an increase in protocolled treatments in mental health care. Nevertheless a substantial group of patients fails to complete therapy in time and therefore undergoes long-term therapy. This research is focused on the obstacles and challenges therapists face in limiting the duration of treatments for patients with an anxiety or mood disorder. The research is done using a semi-structured interview among 17 practitioners. One conclusion is that some of the patient on the department anxiety- and mood disorders have severe problems which cann’t be treated in a therapy of one and a half year. It is unrealistic to wield a guideline of therapy duration of one and a half year for all patients. Another conclusion is that therapist have difficulty stopping therapy because of a personal feeling of responsibility and because they find it hard to disappoint their patients. The challenge for therapist is to create realistic expectations for the patients and adequately prepare patients for the closing of therapy. Third conclusion is that objectives should be more specific and less focused on symptoms. In addition, the objectives should be the centre of the therapy. Surprisingly, the duration of therapy is insufficiently covered in directives and is hardly disclosed to patients. The challenge for therapists is to discuss the duration of therapy and therapy objectives with the patient at the start of, as well as during, therapy. For this, therapists require the support and guidance of their team.
