| Abstract: | This research investigated if the letter from "Slachtoffer in Beeld" (SIB), with information about mediation, is effective, or more specifically, whether or not it corresponds to specific needs of victims, which, in turn, might lead to a stronger intention to participate in and register for mediation. The goal of this study was also to investigate if emotions of victims and other factors have an influence on the intention as well. A total of 67 participants participated in this study, of which 58 participants imagined that they were a victim of a burglary. To investigate if the impact of a crime had an influence, the aftermath of this burglary was manipulated: 32 participants imagined that the burglary had a low impact on them, and 26 participants imagined that the burglary had a high impact on them. The remaining nine participants indicated that they were victims of a crime. All participants filled in a questionnaire, and imagined that they received the letter from SIB together with the letter containing the sentence of the offender. Results showed that the letter was evaluated positively. Furthermore, only an indication of an answer could be given on the question whether or not the letter from SIB was effective (i.e. if it leads to a stronger intention to register for a mediation): a negative evaluation of the letter does not necessarily mean that the intention will decrease. However, an increase in the impact of a crime leads to a lower positive evaluation and recommendation of the letter, which might imply a lower intention. |
