Abstract:The thesis deals with the topic of child poverty in 17 different European countries. It tries to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of family - related transfers in alleviating the at-risk-of poverty rate. The thesis searches for an answer to the question: “What is the effect of family-related benefits on child poverty across European countries in the period from 1987/88 to 2005?” In order to give an answer to this research, at first, the background and scientific relevance of the topic has been discussed. Then the determinants of child poverty were investigated more into detail. A significant impact of the welfare state regime of a country, the family -or household- type a child lives in, the background of the households’ head and the period of time a child lives in has been identified. Using a cross-sectional comparative approach with a time element and the data the Luxembourg Income Study provides on child poverty, family-related benefits and the time span from 1987/88 to 2005, the at-risk-of poverty of children pre- and post-transfers has been examined. In addition, by using the Mitchel formula the poverty reduction effectiveness of family-related benefits has been calculated and assessed.
