Abstract:Background: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is found to be an effective treatment for chronic pain, therefore it was systematically implemented within a number of rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands. It is important that treatments, which are based on ACT, are adequately integrated and performed by professionals in daily practice. Nowadays, more and more research is being done on treatment integrity. However no research is conducted on treatment integrity of ACT for the treatment of chronic pain. Instruments to determine whether professionals perform ACT adequate and competent during the treatment of chronic pain, are not yet developed. Therefore the research question in this study is formulated as follows; “What does a codingscheme for coding and scoring ACT consistent performance of professionals during the treatment of chronic pain in Dutch rehabilitation centres look like?”. Method: Qualitative data of three rehabilitation centres was collected and analysed for this study. In an iterative process a codingscheme was developed by conducting; literature research, viewing and scoring 14 video records and by consultation with head researchers. Results: A codingscheme for coding and scoring ACT consistent performance per minute based on adherence, competence and identification of ACT core process(es) is developed. The scores on adherence and competence are based on a 5-point Likertscale. Furthermore, an overall score for adherence and competence will be given, based on the whole video recording. These scores are also based on a 5-point Likertscale. Conclusion: This research has provided insight into a codingscheme for coding and scoring ACT consistent performance. The developed codingscheme and guidelines give an objective, systematic and consistent approach for coding and scoring ACT consistent performance of professionals during the treatment of chronic pain. Limitations of this study are being discussed and recommendations are given.
