Abstract:Patients with the diagnosis polyarthritis aren't able to reach many of the goals set for themselves based on physical limitations. Therefore, the course "Right on Target!" has been developed. In this course, the patients get to know four different goalmanagementstrategies (maintenance of goals, adjust goals, disengage goals and finding new goals) in order to be able to handle with threatened goals and to establish flexibility in their behavior. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight into how the group sessions in the intervention "Right on Target!" proceed. Attention was paid to the protocol. The researchquestion was whether it is properly followed by the trainers and whether they could explain its content properly to the participants. The atmosphere during the sessions is also investigated. Furthermore attention was paid to the communicationskills of the trainers. The participants of this study were the patients and nurses who provided the course. For this study, the group meetings of the intervention "Right on Target" were recorded with an audio recording device. The researcher listened to 16 group meetings. It was an analysis of the communication that took place during a group meeting between the participants and the nurse and between the participants among each other. During the analysis, a coding scheme was used. The coding scheme provided an overview of the topics based on the study questions. Attention was paid to these topics during the observation. The results showed that all four coaches generally followed properly the protocol and properly transfered the contents of it to the participants. The atmosphere during the sessions was usually secure, relaxed and enjoyable - as intended. Moreover the trainers made use of many different communicationskills which they usually used well. Sometimes there were problems with asking open questions because these hampered the process of the course. By listening to the audio recordings of the meetings understanding of how the group sessions in the intervention "Right on Target!" proceed, was obtained. It was found that the sessions generally proceeded quite positively. It is very useful and necessary to perform such an analysis during the concept phase in order to be able to correct the unfavorable factors in time. It is recommended to reconsider the procedure of the course with regard to the number of sessions. The training of the nurses with regard to the communicationskills could be intensified as well.
