Abstract:Background Research into mental health and well-being has increased in the recent years. Mental health can be seen as a combination of emotional, psychological and social well-being. Examination of well-being is important, because well-being has an impact on the functioning of an individual. Many researches are done on the factors they have a negative impact on well-being, including health problems and loneliness. However, little is known about the development of well-being in people who are lonely and/or experience health problems. Objective This study examines the development of well-being in lonely people with health problems compared with the control group without these complains. Methods This study used data from the Panel Long-term Internet Studies for the Social Sciences, which included a Core Study, a longitudinal study. In some of the households which participate in the Core study, the module mental health was measured four times every three months. Which module includes the instrument, the Mental Health Continuum - Short Form, which measures well-being. The shortened loneliness scale was used as an indication of loneliness and some questions about health are used as an indication for health problems. The survey had a total of 933 participants. Results It has been shown that, in spite of the fluctuations, the development of the well-being in general is reasonably stable over time. In contrast, the development of emotional, social and psychological well-being proceeds fluctuating. However, the factors loneliness and health problems seem to achieve a lasting change in the level of well-being. Both factors predict a low level of well-being. An accumulation between health and loneliness was not in case. Conclusion This study has shown that health problems and loneliness can bring out a lasting change in the development of well-being. The development of well-being shows some slight fluctuations, but remains stable over time.
