Abstract:Background: Dementia is a rising problem in today’s society. Reminiscence therapy is one of the most popular psychosocial therapy methods for people with dementia. A new and innovative method of reminiscence therapy is the method of reminiscence boxes. For this method boxes are filled with objects from the past to trigger dementia patients to get back memories. There is until today no research done with regard to the effect of reminiscence boxes. This research has the purpose to find out in which way the therapy method of reminiscence boxes can be implemented in a specific group of elderly with dementia. Method: For this research five elderly people with dementia from a specific living group in a health facility, three employees of this facilities and two members of a museum were interviewed. The qualitative analysis of ten interviews is accomplished with a bottom-up analysis. The transcripted interviews are studied and important fragments are selected. The fragments are coded by means of a coding scheme. Results: The elements from this research which are significant for the intervention can be summed up into four main themes: Enthusiasm and Participation, Concerns and Aims, Implementation Reminiscence Boxes and Arrangement Reminiscene Boxes. The encountered information speaks for the employment of eight theme based boxes in group sessions. Sessions will be lead by the employees of the health facility and will be a fixed part of the monthly schedule. Conclusion: Trough the results, a valid plan for an intervention at Livio De Meergaarden in 2014 could be established. The encountered results can also be applied at other health facilities in The Netherlands. In further research the practicality of the recommendations made in this rapport can be figured out. Also it must be worked out if these recommendations lead to a successful intervention.
