Abstract:Introduction. Diabetes mellitus is a serious chronic condition, which requires a high degree of self-management. Neither the current health system nor diabetes-intervention in a group setting provides satisfactory results for diabetes care. Although eHealth seems to be a promising approach, the link between online diabetes interventions and improved self-management remains unclear. Objective. This study aims to investigate the literature on web-based diabetes interventions for an improvement of self-management skills, to identify the characteristics of the interventions, and determine the effectiveness of different intervention features. Methods. To investigate this, a systematic review of web-based self-management interventions for diabetes is conducted. Information about the described intervention, research design, and effect measurements are collected and analyzed. Results. The research selection resulted in a total of eight articles. In addition to increasing self-management, interventions have the overall goal to increase physical and psychosocial well-being of the patients. Frequently used intervention features are monitoring, receiving feedback, information, education, exercises, and communication with the peer group and the care provider. Conclusion. Although the number of researches on online diabetes self-management interventions is very limited, statements about the features and effectiveness of these interventions could be made. The objectives, which are chosen in addition to an increase in self-management, could be effects of an improved self-management. Despite much critique on the usual hospital care for diabetic patients, it seems that the offer of web-based diabetes intervention by hospitals is important for integrating effective diabetes care in the common health system. The knowledge and self-efficacy of the users can be improved by the features which are used in the interventions. The by means of the interventions learned skills can improve behaviors, which may be needed in an adequate diabetes self-management. The effectiveness and ineffectiveness of intervention features for diabetes self-management remains unclear after this review. Conducting further research on web-based self-management interventions for diabetes is of great interest. However, this study could demonstrate that self-management seems to be a central concept within diabetes which may have further positive impact on diabetes-related symptoms.
