Abstract:Background: Polyarthritis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease that has a pervasive impact on almost all domains of daily living. Polyarthritis patients often experience difficulties accepting their disease and letting go of unattainable goals, which in turn can lead to frustration and psychological problems. The concept of goal management comprehends four strategies people tend to utilize when trying to get a hold of their life situation. In the present study goal management was measured with domain-specific as well as dispositional instruments. The study aimed to inspect systematic differences and overlap between the results of both measurement methods and to elaborate on the psychometric quality of both instruments. Methods: A sample of 262 Dutch arthritis patients completed both questionnaires. The TENFLEX and the GAS were used to measure dispositional goal management and a set of three vignettes was used in order to measure domain-specific goal management. Vignettes are short descriptions of a person that experiences difficulties reaching a certain goal due to his arthritis. They offer the possibility to examine respondent’s beliefs en behavioral tendencies in a standardized situational context. In the present study a vignette about a person’s interaction with his or her family, a holiday-vignette and a gardening-vignette were used. For analysis, the goal management scores for both measurement methods were calculated and subsequently correlated with each other. Tests for significance of the found differences were done by use of repeated measure ANOVAs. Results. Goal management stemming from the vignettes differed significantly with regard to its pattern as well as the frequency of given answers. The only exception was a low but significant correlation of ,26 for scores of the goal management strategy goal re-engagement within the family-vignette and the dispositional questionnaire. No relationship between the scores of both measurement methods was found for the remaining goal management strategies. Conclusion. The present study has identified domain-specific goal management as a distinct form of goal management that hardly corresponds to goal management patterns that stem from dispositional instruments. Nonetheless, studying goal management by means of vignettes does give insight into the diversity of domain-specific patterns of goal management. Hence, it gives the opportunity to adjust psychological interventions intended to support adaptation to arthritis to the demands of the patients.
