| Abstract: | Our definition of politics today is either related to power struggles among institutions in what we call the state or related to forms of democracy. However, if we look at Hannah Arendt, one of the most prominent political thinkers of the past century, we see that politics much bigger than that. Above all, being human is being political. The thesis focuses on understanding the significance of materiality and technology in Hannah Arendt’s book The Human Condition. The Human Condition is the work of Arendt which is dedicated to investigate vita activa, namely a life devoted to politics. In light of the definition of politics of Arendt, I look at the contemporary theories of politics of technology and argue that these theories are inadequate for us to grasp the full political aspect of things. Finally I investigate the role played by materiality or technologies in Arendt’s concept of politics and political action and argue that for Arendt, materiality is the pre-condition of politics. |
