| Abstract: | With the increasing importance of the European Union as an external economic actor this thesis deals with the EU’s foreign economic policy towards the State of Israel. It asks whether there is a conflict between the EU’s and the Member state’s approaches to their foreign relationship with this neighboring country. Moreover, it elaborates the influence of the Member states France and Germany during the EU’s negotiations with Israel on bilateral agreements in order to determine whether they are undermined by national policies. Finally, it shortly addresses the resulting prospects for EU foreign economic policy-making in general. The research is carried out by using qualitative data. The thesis concludes that the EU has a distinctive approach to its economic relationship with Israel. EU-Israel bilateral ties are not undermined by French and German policies although there is a slight tendency of French hindrance and German support. Besides, the Commission seems to act according to a rather economic and business-oriented attitude. |
