Abstract:Introduction. In 2003, the health system of the Netherlands was transformed into a demand-driven care system. It implied the start of a transition from a medical model to a more social model in the care. This is one of the main reasons why Actiz developed the care-life-plan (CLP). The most important goal of the CLP is to support the client to ‘stay in charge of their own life’ and to help professionals focus on the quality of life of clients. According to a pilot study conducted in Zorgpalet (organization that provides care for the elderly), the care-life-plan was not used sufficiently. Fleuren, Paulussen, van Dommelen & van Buren (2012) established an instrument to measure the determinants of innovation ((MIDI). This instrument is intended for researchers who want to identify which determinants predict the use of the innovation. The MIDI helps researchers to target innovation strategies that can bring about actual use. It is essential to use research tools that measure the constructs they intend to measure. The degree to which they do has significant implications for the validity of studies. Objective. This study has two objectives : 1) to identify what determinants impede or enhance the use of the CLP and 2) to assess the content validity of the MIDI in the setting of a nursing home and home for the elderly, using the CLP as the innovation that should be researched with the MIDI. The content validity of the MIDI is researched by consulting members of the target population (in this study the caregivers of Zorgpalet). Methods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 19 caregivers (17 users of the CLP and 2 nurses of the nursing department of Gerontology and Geriatrics (VGG)). The MIDI includes 29 items. The adjusted MIDI used in this research includes 26 items (3 items were excluded because they referred to the dissemination/adoption stage). Interviews were taped, transcribed and analyzed. SPSS was used to analyze the quantitative data. Conclusions. Enhancing and impeding determinants - five determinants are categorized as enhancing determinants and six are categorized as impeding determinants. The following determinants were categorized as enhancing determinants: ‘correctness’ and ‘completeness’,’ professional obligation’, ‘subjective norm’, ‘legislation and regulations’. The found impeding determinants are: ‘replacement when staff leave’, ‘staff capacity’, ‘time available’, ‘coordinator’ and ‘performance feedback’ and ‘unsettled organization’. Content validity - The ease of understanding of the MIDI was examined during the interviews. Nine items were defined as problematic. A majority of the respondents indicated that the 26 determinants included in the MIDI, affect the use of the CLP. Another objective of this research was to find out whether determinants should be added to the MIDI. Nine determinants were found.
