Abstract:The study focused on attitude of citizens towards the police, moral values, the assessment of the citizens of the last contact with the police and the willingness to report a crime to the police. A total of 97 respondents participated in this research by completing an online questionnaire. We examined whether there is a relationship between people who have a high score on the dimensions of the moral values and reporting a crime to the police. In addition, the research looked at the relationship between reporting a crime and both the assessment of the citizens of the last contact with the police and with their general attitude against the police. Furthermore, we looked if framing can strengthen a relationship. Examined is whether a framing in terms of crime prevention can strengthen the relationship between persons who got a high instead of a low score on the moral value authority/respect and the willingness to report a crime. For people with a high instead of a low score on the dimension harm/care we expected framing in terms of community safety to strengthen the relation with the willingness to report a crime. The results found show that there is a relation between general attitude towards the police and the willingness to report a crime. People with a positive attitude are more willingto report a crime to the police than people who have a negative attitude towards the police. The assessment of the citizens of the last contact with the police does not show a significant relation with the attitude people posses towards the police. This would mean that the latest contact people have with the police does not play a role in the development of someone’s attitude toward the police. Furthermore, we found that citizens with a high score on authority/respect have a more positive attitude toward the police than the citizens who had a low score on the dimension authority/respect. As expected, this was particularly true when the message is framed in terms of crime prevention. There appeared to be no relationship between the score on harm/care and framing on reporting a crime. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
