Abstract:Purpose. Life’s of cancer patients are seriously disturbed when they are diagnosed with the disease. Not only cancer patients are affected, but also the partners of cancer patients. The challenges that partners face after a cancer diagnosis, can lead to severe health problems. Despite the problems of partners of cancer patients current interventions are limited. An online self-help intervention could be appropriate because the internet use has increased over de last couple of years. The purpose of this study was to examine the wishes and needs of partners of cancer patients with respect to an online self-help intervention. Method 139 partners of cancer patients participated. The partners of cancer patients were recruited by the oncology section of the medical spectrum of Twente, the medical centre of the VU, the cancer centre of Amsterdam, and walk-in consultation services for cancer patients. Partners were asked to fill in a questionnaire which would take 20 minutes. Questionnaires could be sended to the University of Twente or could be completed online. Results The biggest needs of partners of cancer patients are information about the consequences of cancer on their (social) life and their feelings. They find it very important that there is information on the website and that they have the opportunity to get in touch with support groups. The intervention has to take less than 30 minutes a week with a duration of 6 weeks or longer. Topics that are important are: communication with the partner, living with cancer and dealing with feelings. Conclusion. The online self-help interventions is a good representation of the group partners of cancer patient. Further research is required for more specific wishes and needs of partners of cancer patients.
