Abstract:Objectives. I) To measure effects following a partnership between Alifa and Tactus on behavior, intention and cognitions determinants of these two outcomes. II) The measuring of determinants of (the intention to) actively identifying, discussing and calling for help. Methods: A qualitative and quantitative observational (cross sectional) research, involving youth workers and executives (Enschede and surroundings). Study 1 has a quasi-experimental design including semi-structured interviews with youth workers and executives. Study 2 includes two measurements with questionnaires involving youth workers. The interviews have been encoded and analyzed by means of open coding. Results. The quantitative results, concerning differences in region, show indications for a mainly positive attitude of the group youth workers from Enschede with respect to the partnership. Moreover indications for a stronger intention to actively identify substance use, a more favorable descriptive norm; number of colleagues that discusses substance use in groups, and larger consensus with respect to calling for help in the group youth workers from Enschede. In favor of the group youth workers outside Enschede is the number of youth workers that actively identify substance use, a more positive expectation concerning the attitude of young people open to discussing substance use, and a more positive attitude of youth workers concerning participation in a cooperation day and courses. Determinants: The task conception concerning calling for help, attitude concerning damaging the relationship of trust by calling for help and attitude concerning the expectations of young people regarding identifying substance use by the youth worker explain for 51% (the intention to) identify (substance use). The task conception regarding calling for help, attitude regarding discussing substance use individually and number of colleagues that discuss substance use explain for 54% (the intention) to discuss substance use. The task conception concerning calling for help and the expectations of colleagues and executives concerning calling for help explain for 34% (the intention) to call for help. There are indications that no protocol has been established despite a need for it. Conclusion. This research shows that the intention of youth workers gets partially explained by task conception (calling for help), social norm (youth, colleagues and executives) and attitude regarding the relationship of trust and discussing individually. For better implementation and evaluation of the partnership a protocol must come concerning how to act at identification of substance use/abuse of young people, with clear task description for youth workers and Tactus. Further research is needed to determine effects of the partnership.
